Rice Rocks New Mexico State, 123.5-79.5

HOUSTON, Texas, January 11. SOPHOMORES Carlyann Miller and Caitlin Warner won two events each to lead the Rice swim team to a 123.5-79.5 dual meet victory over visiting New Mexico State Thursday evening at the Rice Pool.

The Owls took 10 of the 11 events on the way to their seventh dual meet victory of the season. Warner won the 200-yard freestyle with a career-best time of 1:56.08. The standout from Clearwater, Fla., then came back three events later and raced to a narrow win the 200-butterfly with a time of 2:09.31.

Miller, a standout sprinter from Fort Gibson, Okla., showed some versatility with a distance victory in the 500-freestyle (5:06.95). She was also a winner in her first 200-individual medley this season, posting a 2:10.69 to lead a 1-2 Rice finish with freshman Stephanie Eberhardt (2:12.12).

Rice claimed a total of five 1-2 finishes on the day. Diane Gu and Megan Land were 1-2 in the 50-yard freestyle with times of 24.30 and 25.47, respectively. Erin Mattson and Andrea Hurn both registered season-best times (53.33 & 54.05) for the top spots in the 100-free. The Owls were also first and second in both the 200-medley relay (1:51.41) and the 200-free relay (1:39.00).

Sophomore Skylar Craig won the 200-backstroke (2:10.18) and junior Brittany Massengale coasted to a win the rugged 1,000-free (10:13.63).
