Samantha Smith has given Southern Methodist University her verbal commitment. Smith, who is from Parker, Colorado, will join the Mustangs next fall.
She swims for Regis Jesuit, the high school formerly home to 2016 Olympians Missy Franklin and her own brother Clark Smith. While her brother, now a senior at Texas, is one of the NCAA’s top distance swimmers, Smith is strongest in the sprint events. Representing Regis, Smith has been a multiple time Colorado 5A State finalist. She has also been a member of three state title winning relay teams.
Smith’s best times are:
- 50 Free 23.75
- 100 Free 51.64
- 100 Back 55.88
- 100 Fly 56.26
Smith shared with Swimming World,
“I am really excited and honored to become a part of SMU’s swimming legacy with coach Steve Collins. SMU offers excellence in academics and athletics with top notch facilities which was exactly what I wanted. I am excited coach Collins will help me reach my sprinting career goals and proud to contribute to the team’s success.”
The Mustangs will be updating those facilities. In February the school broke ground on a new pool.
SMU won the 2016 American Athletic Conference Championship. Smith would have been a B finalist in the 100 freestyle at last year’s meet. SMU put three swimmers in to the A final last year. Sophomore Adrienn Santa (50.15) will be the one left leading the sprint crew by Smith’s arrival in Dallas.
