2018 TYR PRO SERIES – MESA PSYCH SHEET

As reported earlier this week, the Mesa meet will be Olympic gold medalist Allison Schmitt return to competition, with official entries in the 100 and 200 freestyle. This will be Schmitt’s first time racing since the 2016 Rio Olympics, where she left with a gold medal as part of Team USA’s 800 freestyle relay. Mesa makes sense as a meet to test the comeback waters for Schmitt, who moved to nearby Tempe to continue training with Bob Bowman leading up to the 2016 Olympics.

Many other notable American names are entered to compete next week as well, including some college swimmers just coming off their NCAA season. Indiana’s Blake Pieroni is entered as the second seed in the 200 free after becoming the first man under 1:30 in short course yards just two weeks ago (although Townley Haas would drop the record further later in the meet). Louisville’s Mallory Comerford will also be swimming a full slate of events, including the 100 free where she is the top seed and current U.S. Open Record holder in the event, as will Cal’s Abbey Weitzeil.

Some other notable Olympians scheduled to compete include Chase Kalisz (top seed – 400 IM, 200 IM), Ryan Murphy (top seed – 100 back, 200 back), Leah Smith (top seed – 400 free, 800 free), Kelsi Dahlia (top seed – 100 fly), and Josh Prenot (top seed – 200 breast), with many more U.S. stars peppered through the psych sheet.

The meet runs from Thursday, April 12 through Sunday, April 15, with daily prelims beginning at 9:00am PDT and finals starting at 5:00pm PDT on Thursday April 12 and 4:40pm PDT on April 13-14. You can find more information about the TYR Pro Swim Series at Mesa over on USA Swimming’s website here.
