010 WORLD RECORD FLASHBACK: SHANE GOULD—CELEBRATING 50 YEARS!
by John Lohn
Our “World Record Flashback” series typically selects a singular standard to celebrate and analyze. But this month’s installment focuses on the quartet of global marks established by Australian legend Shane Gould during the 1972 campaign. Three of the records arrived at the Munich Olympics, and with this year marking the Golden Anniversary of those Games, the decision to veer slightly from our normal protocol seemed sensible.

020 THE TOP 10 PERFORMANCES OF 2022
by David Rieder
A packed calendar of long course international racing in 2022 provided plenty of opportunities for the world’s best swimmers to unleash quick performances, and they did exactly that. Six long course world records were broken this year between various domestic-level meets, the FINA World Championships, the Commonwealth Games and the European Championships. Those earning spots among the Top 10 range from 25-year-old veteran Katie Ledecky to a man who broke a world record before turning 18.

023 NUTRITION: TRAINING FREQUENCY = OPTIMAL IMMUNITY = ELITE STATUS
by Dawn Weatherwax
Did you know that in a six-month training period, athletes are seven times more likely to reach their performance goals if they can optimally complete over 80% of their training? However, when taken out of that range, 30% are likely to get injured and 50% will probably get sick! This article focuses on the 50%.

024 ALL IN THE (GEMMELL SWIMMING) FAMILY
by Matthew De George
Good swimmers, but more important, good people: That’s the story of the Gemmell family—Coach Bruce; son, Andrew; and daughter, Erin.

026 ISHOF: BEULAH GUNDLING—THE MOTHER OF ARTISTIC SWIMMING
by Bruce Wigo
Whether defined as a water gymnastics sport or as an aquatic art dance form, there can be no doubt that the evolution from “water ballet” performed at water shows to the Olympic sport of “artistic swimming” owes a great debt to the efforts of Beulah Detwiler Gundling, the International Swimming Hall of Fame’s first inductee for synchronized swimming.

COACHING

033 EFFECTIVE COACHING VIA VARIOUS CUES
by Michael J. Stott
In aquatics, whether it is teaching Learn to Swim or counseling higher-level athletes, there are many ways to teach technique. The use of five standard cues—visual, auditory, logical, verbal or kinesthetic—is a start.

038 SWIMMING TECHNIQUE CONCEPTS: BILATERAL SYMMETRY IN THE UNILATERAL STROKES
by Rod Havriluk
Asymmetries in the four strokes are common and limit performance. Swimmers can, however, see or feel asymmetries during freestyle and backstroke, making it possible to correct these differences and improve performance.
