On the Cover

As the process becomes better known and the technology more accessible, more and more coaches are sticking their swimmers’ ear lobes and fingers to measure the lactate concentration in their blood. With a number of different testing protocols available it is sometimes hard for coaches to communicate effectively with one another. Dr. Jan Prins of the University of Hawaii’s Aquatic Research Lab, says that standardizing test procedures is a must if coaches wish to share and understand one another’s data.
