Pan-American Games 200 freestyle champion Bruce Hayes may think he knows how hard he worked during the race he just finished, but how hard did he really work? On page 11 of this issue, Bruce Noble and Jema Allen examine the topic of perceived exertion and how best to use it during training and competition. Their work found that most swimmers underestimated their actual rate of exertion, especially that required to begin swimming.

Also in this issue, on page 17 Layne Jorgensen presents a simplified test for determining your athletes’ endurance eapability, and Dave Salo gives some findings on a somewhat unorthodox training regimen, beginning on page 20.
