Power Five Conferences Approve Extending Medical Benefits For Student-Athletes
The NCAA’s five largest conferences voted at the annual NCAA Convention in Indianapolis last week to approve a dramatic change to medical care rules for student-athletes among the “Power Five” conference schools.
Using the autonomy system, which grants partial autonomy to the power conferences for making changes to regulations for student-athletes, the five conferences voted to extend medical benefits for athletes for at least two years after they leave their institution. The voting committee was comprised of representatives from the 65 Power Five schools as well as a 15-person athlete committee. The medical benefits proposal was passed almost unanimously by the committee, with only one ACC school opposing.
In an article that appeared in The Washington Post, which you can see here, it was noted that the five conferences also voted on additional measures that included changes to basketball, hockey, and funding for student hosts, all of which passed. You can read more about the vote to extend medical benefits over at the NCAA website.
