Plunkett, Robertson Lift Michigan Water Polo Past Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Maryland, April 19. SENIOR Leah Robertson (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) and junior Ryley Plunkett (Modesto, Calif./Johansen) tallied five points each to help the No. 7-ranked University of Michigan wrap up the 2010 regular season with an 11-7 victory at Maryland on Sunday morning (April 18) inside the Eppley Recreation Center.

Robertson dented the twine five times in the game, while Plunkett scored once and assisted on four U-M markers. In the cage, sophomore Morgan Turner (Mission Viejo, Calif./Trabuco Hills) made five stops and chipped in with two assists during the first half. Freshman Alex Adamson (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) tended the net in the second half, posting five blocks and a pair of assists.

The teams jockeyed back and forth throughout the first half. Maryland took its first lead of the day at 5-4 with just over a minute remaining in the half before Robertson got loose on a counterattack and knotted the game up with 14 seconds to go before the break. The Michigan offense surged in the third period with scores from Plunkett, junior Lauren Orth (Poway, Calif./Poway), freshman Lauren Colton (Tustin, Calif./Tesoro) and a pair from Robertson. Colton's marker proved to be the game-winner as Robertson was the only goal scorer in the final period with both teams locked down defensively for the final frame.

Michigan will begin its quest for a third straight NCAA bid with the opening round of the CWPA Western Division Championship on Saturday (April 24) when it hosts Gannon at 10 a.m. inside Canham Natatorium. MGoBlue.com will provide updates via live blog of all Michigan games during the tournament.
