Pittsburgh Lead Quad Meet After First Day

COLLEGE PARK, Maryland, January 12. THE University of Pittsburgh leads the two-day quad meet with Maryland, Villanova and Richmond. Maryland women's swimming and diving ended the first night of this weekend's quad-meet ahead of Villanova (97-63) and Richmond (89-74). The Terrapins are currently trailing Pittsburgh (86-77) at the halfway point of competition.

Tonight's meet opened with the 1650-yard freestyle. Junior Julie O'Brien (Demascus, Md.) was the top finisher for the Terps on the women's side with a seventh-place swim (18:22.98). Freshman Jackie Davidson (Beverly, Mass.) came in right behind O'Brien in eighth place (18:40.17).

The Terps swept the first relay event of the evening with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay by the team of senior Natalie Ferdinand (St. Thomas, Barbados), senior Sasha Malanina (Volgograd, Russia), senior Gigi deToll (Culpeper, Va.) and sophomore Yelena Skalinskaya (Almtay, Kazakhstan) for a season high of 1:45.72.

Freshman Jen Vogel (Hingham, Mass.) captured a first-place finish in the 100 butterfly with a season best 56.18. Freshman Annie Broome (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished the 100 fly in 57.05 good for a fifth-place finish. Freshman Nina Rossi (Princeton, N.J.) and freshman Patty DeSecenza (Naperville, Ill.) placed seventh and ninth respectively.

In the 100 backstroke, freshman Andrea Lehner (Orchard Park, N.Y.) led the Terps with a second-place time of 56.64. Ferdinand swam a 58.72 in the event for a sixth-place finish.

Senior Sasha Malanina (Volgograd, Russia) took the 400 individual medley event with a first-place and NCAA B-cut time of 4:21.37. In third place was Rossi with her top time in the event this season (4:27.90 ) while junior Kirsten Jones (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) also swam her season high of 4:27.90 for fifth place.

The Terps swam two NCAA B-cut times in the 100 free. Lehner led the meet with a first-place swim (50.37) followed by Skalinskaya in second (50.83). Senior Katarina Csomova (Komarno, Slovakia) led Maryland in the 100 breaststroke with a seventh-place finish (1:07.44).

The first night of competition wrapped up with the 200 free relay. Maryland finished second in the event with Lehner, Skalinskaya, junior Emily Smoak (Salisbury, Md.) and senior Kaleena Laputka (Shamong, N.J.) swimming a 1:34.88.

Competition will continue tomorrow morning. Saturday's meet marks the last home meet for the Terps this season. Seniors Katarina Csomova, Gigi deToll, Natalie Ferdinand, Kaleena Laputka and Sasha Malanina will be honored starting at 10:45 am, prior to the meet. Tomorrow's events will include the 500 free, 400 medley relay, 200 free, 200 IM, 200 fly, 50 free, 200 back, 200 breast, 400 free relay, three meter diving (women) and one meter diving (men).
