Pitt Men at Top in Tri Meet

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania, January 13. AFTER two days of competition the Pitt men's swimming and diving claimed victories over Maryland (242-110) and Villanova (293-59). The Panthers improve to 5-2 on the season and 3-2 in the Big East.

Leading the meet all weekend, the Panthers proved to be dominant as they swept three events today. In one of the three events, the 200 breast, Plutecki (Zielan Gora, Poland/High School #VII) qualified for the NCAA with a time of 1:57.06. Plutecki is the first Panther to earn a NCAA `A' qualifying time this season. He also set a NCAA `B' mark in the 100 breast yesterday. This is just Plutecki's second meet of the season.

Completing the before-mentioned sweep for Pitt in the 200 breast was Barnes, who finished second (2:02.34) and Dave Montgomery (Thorton, Pa./Salesianum School) was third (2:07.47).

Next, the Panthers swept the 200 fly, as junior Chris George (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School) finished first (1:54.93), Geoff Morgan (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall) placed second (1:55.36) and junior David Anderson (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill) was third (1:55.88).

Later, senior Jeff Leath (Mechanicsville, Va./New Community) led three Panthers in the 200 back. Leath placed first at 1:52.57, while junior Steve Jackson (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) was second (1:54.44) and freshman Patrick Bergin (Newcastle, new South Wales/Newcastle Grammar School) was third (1:54.74).

Winning two individual races, George also finished first in the 500 free with a time of 4:37.51. Junior Scott Shearer (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny) placed second in the 500 free at the 4:38.98 mark.

Pitt's `A' and `B' relay teams finished first and third in both the 400 medley and 400 free relays. The `A' 400 medley relay team of Leath, junior Warren Barnes (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton), freshman Rene Hjorth (Copenhagen, Denmark/Copenhagen) and Plutecki finished first with a time of 3:22.35. Then the `A' team of Leath, Hjorth, Kyrejko and freshman Alex Kubicek (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) won the 400 free relay at the 3:06.56 mark.

Sophomore Patrick Mansfield (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) won the 200 free for the Panthers with a time of 1:42.85, while classmate Andrew Kyrejko (West Orange, N.J./The Montclair Kimberley Academy) placed second in the same race at the 1:44.42 mark.

In 1M diving, sophomore Aleksandr Volovetski (Brandon, Fla./Armwood) scored 355.40 points for a first-place finish, while junior Jeremy Stultz (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) placed second at 319.75.

Finishing with other top-three finishes were Mansfield, who was third in the 50 free (21.28) and junior Jared Martin (Richmond, Va./Nova), who was third in the 200 IM (1:58.53).

The Panthers return to Trees Pool on Saturday, Jan. 27, when they host Virginia Tech. Diving begins at 11 a.m. and swimming events follow at noon.
