Philippe Guertin, Zsofia Balazs Win Distance Frees at Canada Cup

MONTREAL, Canada, June 27. THE first night of four featured distance freestyle timed finals as well as multi-class competition at the Canada Cup.

In front of a home-town crowd, Montreal's Philippe Guertin topped the men's 1500-meter freestyle event with a time of 15:43.44. That was the only sub-16:00 time of the day in the men's event. Newmarket's Jake Silverthorn, 17, finished second with a time of 16:01.62, while Gatineau's Nicolas Masse-Savard picked up third-place honors in 16:07.55.

Toronto's Zsofia Balazs took home the women's 800-meter freestyle title in a time of 8:50.63, while 15-year-old Anina Lund of Badger Swim Club finished second overall with a time of 8:51.92. Hamilton's Bridget Coley rounded out the top three in the women's race with a time of 8:52.27.

In multi-class events, Valerie Drapeau topped the women's 200-meter free S5 in 5:15.42, while Maxime Rousselles downed Malcolm Fairweather, 2:09.61 to 2:40.97, in the men's 200-meter free S14.

Aurelie Rivard raced to the women's 400-meter free S10 win in 4:49.46, while Camille Berube claimed the women's 400-meter free S8 victory in 5:45.75. Elodie Tremblay posted a 6:23.93 to win the women's 400-meter free S9 title.

Benoit Huot captured the men's 400-meter free S10 victory in 4:29.60 with Devin Gotell leading the way in the men's 400-meter free S13 with a 4:44.01. Philippe Vachon turned in a 4:55.83 to win the men's 400-meter free S9, while Jean Lapointe raced to a 5:49.69 to win the men's 400-meter free S8.
