With U.S. Olympic Trials coming to end last week, this was a relatively quiet week for in-pool competition around the globe. Out of the pool, however, the 2016 European Open Water Championships began with the 10K last week in Hoorn, Netherlands. Our performance of the week comes from that competition, where fans witnessed a rare tie between Rachele Bruni and Aurelie Muller for gold in the 10K event. Take a look at Aurelie’s Twitter post below to see the finish:

Touching in matching 2:07:00.1’s, Bruni (who represents Italy) and Muller (who represents France) bested the field by over three seconds to share gold in an unprecedented tie race. The race was the first shared gold in the event’s history. This isn’t the first time at the top of the podium for Muller, who was the gold medalist at the 2015 World Championships. Bruni has 6 gold medals at the European Championships from the 5K team and individual races, but this is her first gold medal for the 10K. Bruni was fourth in this event at last summer’s World Championships. With less than a month until the Olympic Games and the official participant list just released by FINA, this competition served to show which Europeans to watch for in the open water events in Rio.

Congratulations Rachele Bruni and Aurelie Muller on earning Swimming World’s Performance of the Week!

“this was a relatively quiet week for in-pool competition around the globe”. Ok, I guess that if you pretend that Sarah Sjöström didn´t swim a 1.54.34 200m free, 55.95 100m fly, 24.20 50m free and 25.07 50m fly at the swedish championships, then it probably was a pretty quiet week.
