Performance of the Week: June 5, 2012

PHOENIX, Arizona, June 5. WITH less than three weeks until the U.S. Olympic Trials, many swimmers are beginning to taper, so we are starting to see some fast performances as swimmers start to feel the effects of even a little bit of rest.

Swimming at the Longhorn Aquatics Elite Invitational last weekend, Allison Schmitt broke the U.S. Open record in the 200 freestyle with a 1:55.04. That time is also a tenth off the American record Schmitt set at the 2009 world championships. The 200 freestyle was already going to be a great event to watch at the Olympic Trials, and Schmitt has just made it a little more interesting.

Congratulations, Allison Schmitt. You've earned our Performance of the Week honor!
