Performance of the Week: Feb. 5, 2013

PHOENIX, Arizona, February 5. MICHAEL McBroom was far and away the top performer from the past week, setting a new NCAA record in the 1000-yard freestyle with an 8:43.48. McBroom had been swimming the 1000 free in dual meets all season, but had never gone faster than a 9:03. With that swim on Friday, he becomes the fastest collegiate swimmer in the event, taking down the previous NCAA record of 8:44.11, held by Chris Thompson since 2001.

McBroom still has about seven seconds to go to get the American record of 8:36 held by Erik Vendt, but at the very least, this puts McBroom squarely in the chase for the NCAA title in the 1650 freestyle in March. He'll have a lot of competition, including reigning champion Martin Grodzki. McBroom won this event in 2011, so he knows what it feels like to stand at the top of the podium.

Congratulations, Michael. You've won our Performance of the Week!
