Performance of the week: Feb. 19, 2013

PHOENIX, Arizona, February 19. LAST week's Arena Grand Prix meet in Orlando, Florida, was a great opportunity for many athletes to see where they are in this phase of training, and no swimmer was in a better place than Becca Mann. The 15-year-old won four events, with her 800 freestyle providing the highlight of the entire meet.

Her winning time of 8:27.34 is not only a lifetime best for Mann, but the fastest swim in the event so far in 2013. Granted, we're in February, but it's still a fast time. To put into more perspective, it would have placed seventh at the Olympics last year.

Mann split the race well, and as you can see in this video, never faltered in her stroke rate or technique. She split a 4:12 at the 400 and came home in a 4:14-high, showing not only some good opening speed but great endurance.

This puts Mann squarely in the group of swimmers to watch in the distance events throughout this spring and summer season, particularly at the world championship trials.

Congratulations, Becca Mann. You've won our Performance of the Week!
