Passages: Kelley Allen, 2010 Florida Age Group Coach of the Year Murdered

OLDSMAR, Florida, October 29. OVER the weekend, Tampa Bay Area age group coach Kelley Allen was allegedly shot and killed, along with his girlfriend, by his girlfriend's mentally disturbed 18-year-old son, as reported by the Tampa Bay Times. He was 49.

Allen was a well-respected coach based out of Florida, who most recently coached at the Westchase Branch of Tampa Bay Aquatics (TBAY). Prior to TBAY, he coached at the Clearwater Aquatic Team. He was been coaching in the Tampa Bay Area for over 20 years. In 2010, he was named the Florida Swimming Age Group Coach of the Year and was a member of the Florida Swimming Zone Team staff in 2004 and 2006.

“He's going to be irreplaceable,” TBAY colleague Susan Curnette told the Tampa Bay Times. “Kelley never spoke a bad word to a swimmer, ever. Even if you didn't have a good swim, he made each child feel like he was the best swimmer in the pool.”

In addition to coaching at TBAY, Allen taught a number of children how to swim by running the Little Flippers program for the Westchase Homeowners Association.
