Passages: Former Lady Vol Kate Zenda Santarelli, 39

MADBURY, New Hampshire, April 7. FORMER Lady Vol swimming standout Katherine "Kate" Zenda Santarelli, 39, of Madbury, N.H., passed away unexpectedly on April 1, 2009, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital following a brief illness.

Santarelli was a four-year member of the Tennessee women's swimming and diving team where she competed in the backstroke and distance freestyle events from 1988-92.

She swam at the 1990 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships in the 100-yard backstroke and scored points at the Southeastern Conference Championships during her sophomore and junior seasons.

Santarelli was a 12-year kidney transplant survivor and a staunch advocate for organ and tissue donation. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband of nine years, Mike S. Santarelli of Madbury, N.H.; her son, Griffin T. Santarelli of Madbury, N.H.; and her mother, Mary S. Zenda of Madbury. N.H.
