Passages: ASCA Hall of Famer Don Sonia, 82

VERO BEACH, Florida, October 10. ASCA Hall of Famer Don Sonia, 82, passed away Saturday “after a bout with pneumonia,” reported the TCPalm in Florida.

Sonia earned induction in the ASCA Hall of Fame last year, and was inducted into the Class of 2012 Hall of Fame last month on Sept. 7.

Sonia owned and coached the Glendale Swim School from 1961 to 1966 before moving to the Philadelphia Aquatic Club. He began his coaching career in the Army in 1954, before finishing a 57-year career with the Indian River Masters program.

Some legendary swimmers either swam for or coached with Sonia during his career, including Ed Spencer, Tom Miliam, Frank Bates, Ken Krueger, Tim Barnes, Roy Saari, and Billy Craig and Rich McGeagh, Jack Bauerle, present coach at University of Georgia, and Coach Steve Fenning.
