IRVINE, California, August 18. KATE Ziegler completed a remarkable turnaround of her fortunes from just a year ago. Last year, she failed to show up for the 2009 U.S. Nationals due to contracting a virus. This year, she's nearly on top of the world with a win in the women's 800 free.

Ziegler clocked a time of 8:21.59 for the triumph, second to only Rebecca Adlington's 8:21.25 from the Mare Nostrum circuit stop in Barcelona. Ziegler defended her 2006 title when she won the event at Pan Pacs with an 8:24.56.

USA's Chloe Sutton, a two-sport star who also shines in the open water events, finished second in her first breakthrough international meet in the pool with an 8:24.51. She chopped a bit of time from her personal best of 8:24.77 and improved her sixth-ranked time in the world.

Australia's Katie Goldman earned third in 8:26.38 to round out the podium. Goldman fell short of her season best time of 8:22.83, which is now ranked third in the world this year.

Australia's Melissa Gorman (8:30.45), Chile's Kristel Kobrich (8:31.95), Japan's Maiko Fujino (8:33.84), Australia's Blair Evans (8:34.80) and USA's Haley Anderson (8:35.33) completed the top eight.
