Pakistan Record Holder Muhammad Mustafa Awan, 23, Shot and Killed

Muhammad Mustafa Awan, an elite swimmer from Pakistan, was shot and killed in his home country on Tuesday, per reports out of Pakistan.

Mustafa Awan was 23 years old. He was reportedly shot outside of his home in the village of Jatli in Rawalpindi. The assailants fled the scene, and no arrests have been made or motive disclosed in the killing. Police in the Pakistan province of Punjab are investigating.

Mustafa Awan set a national record in the men’s 200 breaststroke at Pakistan’s National Games in Islamabad in 2019. He won four gold medals at that event, representing the Army team (he was, per reports, employed by a government intelligence agency). He also swam a leg of the Pakistani record-holding mixed medley.

Mustafa Awan represented Pakistan at the FINA Short-Course Worlds just last month in Dubai, finishing 42nd in the men’s 50-meter breast and 57th in the 100 breast.
