Pac-12 Women’s Championships Day 2: Torri Huske, Taylor Ruck Surge to Sub-22 50s as Stanford Builds Lead

The 2023 Pac-12 Women’s Championships continued with the Day 2 finals on Thursday night from Federal Way, Wash.

The evening  session consisted of the 500 freestyle, 200 IM and 50 freestyle as well as 1-meter diving and the 200 free relay.

Stanford won the 200 free relay and went 1-2 in the 50 free to built its lead heading into the third day of the meet.

Arizona’s Delaney Schnell won the 1-meter diving with 355.50 points.

USC fifth year Carolina Sculti took second with 324.34, followed by Utah’s Holly Waxman (311.15) and USC’s Nike Agunbiade (306.80).

Pac-12 Women’s 500 Free

Arizona State senior Lindsay Looney dropped three seconds from her prelims time to win the conference title in the 500 freestyle, winning in 4:38.29.

She held off Stanford senior Morgan Tankersley by seven hundredths of a second thanks to a 26.73 final split.

Tankersley took second in 4:38.36.

Meanwhile, Molly Batchelor gave the Sun Devils a 1-3 finish with her time of 4:39.54.

Stanford had three more scorers in the event with sophomore Aurora Roghari taking fourth (4:39.77), freshman Kayla Wilson taking seventh (4:42.78) and freshman Natalie Mannion finishing eighth (4:43.27).

Cal seniors Ayla Spitz (4:39.93) and Mia Motekaitis (4:41.44) went 5-6 for the Golden Bears.

Pac-12 Women’s 200 IM

The Cal Golden Bears put together a 1-2 finish in the 200 IM. Sophomore Leah Polonsky dropped three seconds from her prelim time to touch the wall in 1:54.02, a dominating performance.

Junior teammate Isabelle Stadden was second in 1:55.52, a second and a half behind, despite dropping a half second from her prelim time. It was a 60-point performance for Cal.

USC took the next two spots with senior Isabelle Odgers taking third in 1:55.68, followed by freshman Justina Kozan (1:56.62).

Stanford took three of the next four spots with freshmen Lucy Bell (1:56.64), Charlotte Hook (1:57.49) and Gigi Johnson (2:00.08) going 5-7-8. Arizona State’s Ieva Maluka was sixth in 1:57.37.

Pac-12 Women’s 50 Free

Stanford built its lead with a stellar 1-2 performance in the 50 freestyle.

Despite not being the main event for either swimmer, Stanford’s Torri Huske and Taylor Ruck put together some incredible speed to take the top two spots and earn a combined 60 points for the team.

Huske matched her prelims time to win in 21.67. Ruck was just two tenths behind in 21.87, the only two in the field to break 22 seconds.

UCLA took the next two spots with senior Claire Grover finishing third in 22.13, followed by senior Rachel Rhee touching in 22.21.

USC juniors Anicka Delgado and Hanna Henderson tied for fifth in 22.30.

Stanford sophomore Amy Tang finished seventh in 22.33 and Cal sophomore Stephanie Akakabota was eighth (22.61).

Pac-12 Women’s 200 Free Relay

After going 1-2 in the 50 free, the Stanford Cardinal kept the springtime momentum going in the 200 free relay.

Placing the top two from the 50 (Huske and Ruck) in the middle of the relay, Stanford won the event in 1:25.98.

Claire Curzan led off with a 21.59, followed by Torri Huske (21.33), Taylor Ruck (21.45) and Amy Tang (21.61), who was seventh in the 50 free.

Cal’s Emma Davidson, Isabelle Stadden, McKenna Stone and Eloise Riley took second in 1:28.14.

USC’s Anicka Delgado, Kaitlyn Dobler, Elise Garcia and Hanna Henderson took third in 1:28.19.

The story here is an ASU program that was dead in the water (pun completely intended) a few years ago, and now, with a reserving women’s team and the men ranked number one in the country, IS BACK! Congratulations to Lindsay Looney and the Devils. Forks Up!!!
