Pac-12 Weekly Preview: USC Men Face Cal, Stanford; Arizona-ASU Looms

After a week showcasing the Pac-12 women, this week, the spotlight is on the Pac-12 men.

There are only three meets on the men’s side, but they are all between rivals.

Arizona and Arizona State, USC-Cal and USC-Stanford are all on tap for this weekend. All should be intriguing meets as we march closer to the Pac-12 Championships.

USC faces Cal on Friday then heads to Stanford on Saturday for a jam-packed weekend in the water that features a trio of top-10 teams in the country.

The Trojans last competed two weeks ago with a win against Minnesota. USC rolls into the weekend ranked No. 10 and undefeated in dual meets.

Patrick Mulcare has been huge for USC. He won the 100-yard back in 48.20 and then glided to first in the 200 back in 1:48.61 against Minnesota.

Cal is ranked No. 1 and also unbeaten. Stanford is No. 7.

The Golden Bears are coming off of a sweep of Arizona and Arizona State.

Cal senior Andrew Seliskar and sophomore Daniel Carr led the win over the Wildcats in Tucson, as Seliskar captured the 200 butterfly in a time of 1:43.78 and the 500 freestyle with a mark of 4:23.86. Carr, meanwhile, swept the backstroke events with a 47.67 in the 100 and 1:45.07 in the 200.

Stanford also is coming off of a sweep of Arizona and Arizona State, led by the Cardinal distance crew.

The group flexed its muscle in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a one-two-three finish, led by James Murphy (9:08.19) with True Sweetser (9:14.44) in second and Matthew Hirschbherger (9:14.85) in third.

Meanwhile, Arizona State will swim at Arizona on Saturday for the rival in the desert. The Sun Devils are ranked No. 17, while the Wildcats are No. 15.

There are also two women’s meets. The Arizona-Arizona State meet is a men’s and women’s meet, bringing the rivals together.

The other women’s meet is Oregon State at Utah on Saturday.
