Pac-12 Men’s Championships Day 4 Prelims: Sun Devils Closing in on Title

The 2024 Pac-12 Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships continued with the Day 4 prelims from Federal Way, Washington.

The events on deck for the session are the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke and 200 butterfly.

Pac-12 Men’s 200 Backstroke

Arizona State took the top two seeds in NCAA A cut times to kick off the final day of the conference championships.

Sophomore Owen McDonald took the top seed in 1:38.49, about a half second ahead of fellow sophomore Hubert Kos (1:39.05) as the Sun Devils look to keep control in the meet.

Stanford junior Aaron Sequeira took the third seed in 1:39.62, leading three Cardinal swimmers. Sophomore Josh Zuchowski took the fifth spot (1:40.62) and freshman Rex Maurer took the sixth spot (1:40.68).

Cal grad student Sebastien Somerset took the fourth seed in 1:40.32, leading three Golden Bears. Ziyad Saleem took the seventh spot (1:04.73) ahead of Kai Crews (1:41.09).

Pac-12 Men’s 100 Free

It was another 1-2 seeded finish for the Sun Devils in the 100 free.

Senior Jack Dolan took the top spot in 41.38, just ahead of sophomore Jonny Kulow, who got to the wall in 41.53. Teammate Patrick Sammon took the fourth seed in 41.85.

Cal senior Matthew Jensen took the third spot in 41.57.

Arizona’s Ralph Daleiden Ciuferri took the fifth seed in 42.07, followed by Cal’s Liam Bell (42.17), Stanford’s Rafael Gu (42.18) and Stanford’s Luke Maurer (42.2).

Pac-12 Men’s 200 Breaststroke

Arizona State dominated once again, this time taking the top four seeds in the 200 breaststroke.

Senior David Schlicht took the top spot in 1:51.41, an NCAA B cut.

Sophomore Cale Martter took the second spot in 1:52.19, ahead of NCAA record-holder Leon Marchand, who took the third seed in 1:52.22. His meet record set last year was 1:47.67 and his NCAA record at the 2022 NCAA Championships is 1:46.91.

Sophomore Andrew Dobrzanski took the fourth spot in 1:52.98.

Stanford sophomore Zhier Fan took the fifth spot in 1:53.03, ahead of Cal’s Hank Rivers (1:53.13), Stanford’s Ron Polonsky (1:53.84) and Cal’s Sean Swift (1:54.30).

Pac-12 Men’s 200 Butterfly

Arizona State freshman Ilya Kharun claimed the top seed in the 200 butterfly to close the session. He got to the wall in 1:39.52.

USC freshman Krzysztof Chmielewski took the second seed in 1:41.45.

Arizona State senior Alexander Colson got in to the third spot with a 1:41.64, ahead of Arizona’s Haakon Naughton (1:41.90) and USC’s Michal Chmielewski (1:42.51).
