Pac-12 Men’s Championships Day 3 Prelims: Arizona State Stacks 400 IM Final

The 2024 Pac-12 Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships continued with the Day 3 prelims from Federal Way, Washington.

The events on deck for the session are the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke.

Pac-12 Men’s 400 IM

Arizona State took the top four seeds in the 400 IM and were all pretty near their seed times.

Senior David Schlicht took the top seed in the event at 3:38.29.

Meanwhile, junior Leon Marchand took the second seed at 3:39.20, clearly holding some in the tank for tonight’s final. His time was a second slower than his seed time and 11 seconds off his NCAA record time set two years ago at the NCAA Championships.

Sophomore Zalan Sarkany took the third seed in 3:40.79, while sophomore Cale Martter took the fourth spot in 3:40.94.

Daniel Matheson snagged the eighth seed in 3:43.31, giving the Sun Devils five in the finals.

Pac-12 Men’s 100 Butterfly

Arizona State freshman Ilya Kharun claimed the top seed in the 100 butterfly in 44.42, ahead of a trio of Stanford swimmers.

The Cardinal’s Rafael Gu (44.99), Aaron Sequeira (45.20) and Andrei Minakov (45.31) were the next three. Minakov is the Pac-12 record holder at 43.71 and holds the meet record at 43.90.

It was back to Arizona State for three of the final four seeds with Filip Senc-Samardzic (45.49), Jonny Kulow (45.51) and Alexander Colson (45.91) making the top eight.

Pac-12 Men’s 200 Free

The Arizona State show continued as the Sun Devils took three of the top four seeds in the 200 free.

Sophomore Owen McDonald grabbed the top seed in 1:32.06, going 1-2 with senior Julian Hill (1:32.32).

Junior Patrick Sammon took the fourth spot in 1:32.56, just behind Stanford freshman Henry McFadden (1:32.42).

It could be another landslide of points for Arizona State.

Pac-12 Men’s 100 Breaststroke

Cal grad student Liam Bell led a trio of Golden Bears in the final of the 100 breaststroke.

Bell got to the wall in 51.46 to earn the top seed heading into finals.

Arizona State sophomore Andy Dobrzanski took the second seed in 51.52, followed by Stanford’s Ron Polonsky (51.55) and Zhier Fan (51.93).

Cal’s Hank Rivers (51.97) and Matthew Jensen (52.05) followed.

Pac-12 Men’s 100 Backstroke

It was back to the Sun Devils as the top seeds in the 100 backstroke to close out the session.

Sophomore Hubert Kos took the top seed in 44.03 to break the pool record.

Senior Jack Dolan claimed the second seed in 45.07, a second ahead of the rest of the field.

Stanford junior Aaron Sequeira, swimming a double, took the third seed in 46.01.

Arizona’s Ryan Hardy took the fourth seed (46.17), while Cal’s Cai Krews was fifth (46.30).
