Oregon State vs. San Diego State

SAN DIEGO, California, October 2. SAN Diego State swimmers set Aztec Aquaplex facility records in seven events along with one school record as they defeated Oregon State, 150-125, Saturday afternoon. It was the opening dual meet of the season for the Aztecs, who extended their streak of victories over non-conference opponents to 28 in a row.

SDSU began the day by posting an Aquaplex record in the 200 medley relay. The foursome of Leona Jennings, Katelyn Weddle, Brooke Vessey and Emilee Jennings turned in a time of 1:43.28, a mark that eclipsed the previous pool best by 1.25 seconds. It also marked the beginning of a stellar day for Leona Jennings who would go on to win four individual events and set three more facility records in the process.

The second race of the meet not only brought a new Aquaplex record, but a new San Diego State school record as well. Freshman Kelly Marquenie went 9:57.83 in the 1000 freestyle shattering the old pool best by 13 seconds and besting the former school record by over two seconds as she became the first SDSU swimmer to break the 10 minute mark in the event. Later in the day, Marquenie also took top honors in the 500 free where her time of 4:56.03 goes down as the second-best ever at the Aquaplex.

In the third event of the meet, the trio of Stephanie Koch (1:51.03), Meghan Zimmer (1:53.22) and Alexis McCoy (1:56.11) swept the top three spots in the 200 yard freestyle to help send SDSU on its way to the meet victory.

Leona Jennings then captured first in the 100 backstroke with a pool record time of 54.86. She would later set Aquaplex records with first-place finishes in the 200 back (2:01.06) and 400 individual medley (4:25.98). Jennings also won the 50 free in 24.04, the second-fastest mark at the facility.

Sophomore Katelyn Weddle accounted for a pair of pool records in the 100 and 200 breaststroke with times of 1:02.06 and 2:16.53 respectively. Both marks improved upon Aquaplex records that she set during her freshman season.

The eighth pool record was set by Oregon State's Rachel O'Brien in the 200 fly with a time of 2:02.68. It was the lone event that the Beavers captured over the course of the meet as well.

Other individual winners for San Diego state included Emilee Jennings in the 50 with a time of 24.04, the second-fastest time for the Aquaplex, and Brook Vessey in the 100 butterfly (56.94).

The swimming portion of the meet concluded with the 400 free relay where the team of Zimmer, Koch, Marquenie and Shaida Solimani took first with a time of 3:28.10, the third-best time ever for a competitive event at the facility.

In the diving events, San Diego State provided the only two competitors as OSU does not field any divers. Aztec junior Kristen Meier edged freshman Hattie Lamping 242.10 to 237.75 in the one-meter competition in the first SDSU meet for both divers. In the three-meter, Meier took top honors with a score of 251.85 as Lamping finished with a total of 223.95 points.

SDSU will have three weeks away from competition to prepare for its next meet, a triple dual against New Mexico, Colorado State and Air Force to get its 2010-11 Mountain West Conference season underway. That meet will take place on Saturday, Oct. 23, at the Seidler Natatorium in Albuquerque at 11:00 a.m. (MT)
