NEW COMMIT: Billings, Montana native Peter Thompson, one of the top distance swimmers in the class, has recently announced his verbal commitment to the University of Virginia for the 2021-22 season and beyond.

He will join the Hoos’ class of 2025 along with Daniel Worth, Connor BoyleMax IidaTyler SicignanoJack AikinsColin Bitz and Matthew Styczen.

Thompson swims year-round with Billings Aquatic Club and most recently finished 15th in the 500 free at Juniors West in December after taking sixth in the 1500m free at Junior Nationals in August. He was a seven-time Montana LCM Championship gold medalist this past summer and earned six best times at Federal Way Sectionals last winter.

Thompson competed at the USA Swimming Open Water National Championships and raced himself into earning a USA Swimming National Junior Team Spot for Team USA in the 10K. He currently holds seven Montana state age group records, is the fastest miler in Montana state history, and ranks in the top-50 for the 15-16 age group nationally in the 1500m free.

In SCY, his best times include:

  • 200 free – 1:39.76
  • 500 free – 4:25.96
  • 1000 free – 9:05.95
  • 1650 free – 15:17.66

In LCM, his best times include:

  • 200m free – 1:56.38
  • 400m free – 4:01.57
  • 800m free – 8:17.84
  • 1500m free – 15:35.51 (Olympic Trials cut)

Thompson has made tremendous improvements over the past two years, dropping 15 seconds in the 500 free, 32 seconds in the 1000 free, and well over a minute in the mile. Even with 1.5 years of club swimming still to go before arriving in Charlottesville, he will add valuable depth to the Hoos’ lineup; he would’ve scored in the top-20 in the mile at the 2019 ACC Championships where UVa finished third overall in the team standings.
