WEYMOUTH – Samuel Rice, an open water swimmer who trains with the Weymouth Club Waves in Massachusetts, has decided to attend the University of Tennessee.

Rice should grow throughout four years of swimming in the burgeoning distance freestyle group in Knoxville, but will also enjoy the potential to train with open water swimmers like Alex Meyer at Tennessee.  He will also have David Heron and Evan Pinion in town to learn from.

Rice, currently ranked 15th in the state of Massachusetts by CollegeSwimming.com, has some room to grow in the pool as a future Volunteer.

“I chose Tennessee because I felt like a part of the team right away,” Rice told Swimming World. “The coaches and the training environment made it a perfect fit for me. I’m excited to be a part of one of the best distance programs in the country.”

Rice competed at open water nationals last summer, finishing 11th in the 5K among the 18-and-under division.

In the pool, his best times are a 9:25.72 in the 1000-yard free and a 15:39.33 in the 1650-yard free from last March.  Look for him to make some improvements this year.
