TOKYO, Japan, June 29. OLYMPIC gold medalist Ai Shibata, who won the women's 800-meter freestyle at the 2004 Athens Games, said she will retire from swimming competitively after the 2008 Beijing Games, according to an article in the Kyodo News.
"I hope I can swim the last race of my career at the (Beijing) Olympics. Beijing is where it will end, regardless of how I perform there," Shibata told Kyodo News.
Shibata's Olympic win in the 800 free served as the initial female gold medal for Japan in a freestyle event.
