Ohio State Women Top Toledo

COLUMBUS, Ohio, November 18. THE Ohio State women's swimming and diving team beat Toledo, 170-119, Friday at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in the Buckeyes last dual meet of the fall season. The Buckeyes swam the fastest time in every event of the meet, despite choosing to swim the last four events exhibition.

The Buckeyes opened the meet with Top 2 places in the 200-yard medley relay. The `A' team of Elaine Chan (So., Hong Kong China/ Hupp Yenn), Erin Church (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline), Linda Lund (Jr., Roennede, Denmark/Haslev) and Annie Rennenbom (Jr., Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) out touched Toledo to win in 1:47.14. Ohio State also claimed the second-place spot after the Rockets relay was disqualified.

The women extended their lead over the Rockets when they went 1-3-4-5 in the 200-yard freestyle. Griet Buelens (Jr., Kapelle-Op- Den-Bos, Belgium/Ursuline Academy) led the Buckeyes with a first-place finish. She recorded her second win of the night in the 200-yard butterfly, stopping the clock at 2:01.70.

The Buckeyes swept the first three places in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke. Church touched in ahead of the group in the sprint distance to finish in 1:06.15. Rebekah Rychalvsky (Sr., Sydney, Australia/Castle Hill) and Colleen Schweitzer (Fr., Highlands Park, Colo./Highlands Ranch) filled the next two spots. Freshman Megan Alexander (Worthington, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) won the 200-yard distance when she touched in first at 2:22.94. Rychalvsky (2:24.94) picked up another second-place finish in the event, while Schweitzer (2:25.88) again took third.

Ohio State continued the winning tradition in the backstroke events. Gunenc came up with the win in the 100-yard distance with the team's fastest time of the season, 58.72. Jill Lockhart (Fr., Munice, Ind./Yorktown) won the 200-yard backstroke for the second time this season, swimming the race in 2:06.19. Mitchell rounded out the Top 3, finishing in 2:10.80.

Buelens posted the fastest time of the meet in the 500-yard freestyle with 4:57.65 although her win did not score points for the Buckeyes. Gunenc was responsible for the fastest swim in the 100- yard butterfly. She was the race in 57.00. Lund also stopped the clock first in the 200-yard individual medley (2:09.41), with Samantha Johnson (Jr., Cleveland, Ohio/Hawken) coming in second. Both Lund and Johnson swam the event in their season-best times.

The women closed the meet with the fastest time in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:36.43).

Julie Broms (Sr., Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) extended her undefeated record on the 3-meter to 4-0. She won the event with a score of 308.92. Chelsea Davis (So., Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) followed her by just one point in the second-place position with 307.27. Davis earned her own title on the 1-meter springboard, winning the event with a score of 294.15.

"I'm happy with the women because they made some improvements from last weekend," Jeanne Fleck, head swimming coach, said. "The people that took to heart what we worked on during the week saw improvements. We had some really good swims, some solid swims. I am excited for the Invite. If we keep working on the little things we are going to be where we need to at the end of the season."

The Buckeyes will return to action Dec. 1-3, when it plays host to the second annual Ohio State Swimming and Diving Invitational at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
