Northern Sun Championships: Day One

OMAHA, Nebraska, February 20. THE UNO swimming and diving team held down third place after the second day of competition at the Northern Sun Championships. The Mavericks are hosting the event at HPER pool in Omaha. Highlighting the day for UNO were three national qualifying times.

The Mavericks have 295 points, just eight behind second place Minnesota State Mankato. St. Cloud State leads the meet with 368 points.

Lindsey Kline continued to perform well in the distance events. One day after winning the 1,000 yard freestyle, she posted a qualifying time in the 500 yard free with a time of 5:00.77, good for second place. She finished just .15 seconds behind Elizabeth Hoffman of South Dakota. Amy Bechdolt of UNO finished in fifth with a time of 5:12.14.

Laura Kemp swam a qualifying time in the 200 yard individual medley. She finished second in a time of 2:08.02, clearing the qualifying mark by just .07 seconds.

In the 50 yard freestyle, Kristy Gmeiner finished in fifth with a time of 24.08.

In the 400 yard medley relay, the Mavs' combo of Gmeiner, Carrie Murphy, Jessica LaFave and Cait Hopkins earned a qualifying time for the national championship meet. They finished fourth with a time of 3:54.86.

The Mavericks' 200 yard freestyle relay team of Lucy Zamecnik, Katey Howarter, Colleen Klaiber and Gmeiner took third with a time of 1:37.32. Minnesota State Mankato won the event with a time of 1:34.53. St. Cloud State was second.
