Northern Iowa vs. Illinois State

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa, October 23. THE University of Northern Iowa swimming and diving team comes up short to Illinois State University, 198-100. However, the Panthers finished the meet with five first-place finishes.

Diver Bethany Olson took first in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives. Olson picked up 232.13 points in the 1-meter dive and 245.40 points in the 3-meter dive.

Stephanie Frederick came up with the top-spot in the 50 freestyle with a finishing time of 24.79.

In the 200 backstroke, Kelly McCullough finished with a time of 2:13.76, to take first in the event. Teammate Natalie Johnson was right behind her with a time of 2:14.85, to take second. McCullough also took third in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:17.71.

Frederick, Kayla McCormick, Rebecca Ortmann and McKenzie Smith teamed up to take the top-spot in the 200 freestyle relay. The quartet finished in a time of 1:43.02. The relay team of Sarah Hedeen, Stephanie Yattoni, Ashlee Graham and Jaime Pearson finished in second place with a time of 1:45.57

Johnson, finishing with a time of 1:01.91, took third in the 100 backstroke. Pearson finished behind her with a time of 1:03.10.

Caryn Knight (1:10.39) and Sarah Hedeen (1:11.56) took third and fourth, respectively, in the 100 breaststroke.

In the 100 freestyle, Ortmann took the third place spot with a finishing time of 57.05. Smith finished in 57.26 and April Mangrich finished in 59.51 to take fourth and fifth, respectively.

Josie Itzen took the runner-up spot in the 200 IM finishing with a time of 2:16.94. Itzen also took third in the 200 breaststroke finishing in 2:33.23.

The Panthers next action will come next Sat., Oct. 30 against North Dakota. The meet is set to start at 12 p.m. at the Hyslot Sports Center pool.
