North Penn Girls Capture PIAA 3A State Title

While the North Allegheny team dominated the boys meet, North Penn handily won the 2018 Pennsylvania 3A girls high school state meet, scoring 258 points. Avon Grove was second with 203 points.

The first relay results mirrored those of the eventual team scores. North Penn’s Megan ZartmanHaley MuthClaudia Thamm, and Rosalinda Rivera were first to the wall in the 200 medley relay, touching in 1:43.95. Sam PagliaOlivia PaolettiSydney Pagila, and Izzy Paloetti were second for Avon Grove in 1:44.33

Morgan Scott, a senior from Pennridge, dominated the 200 freestyle, touching in 1:46.34. Upper Dublin’s Abbie Amdor was second (1:49.04) and Hershey’s Sally Tafuto finished third (1:50.12). Scott came down in distance for her second event, winning the 100 freestyle in 49.22 ahead of Gateway’s Olivia Livingston (49.63) and Amdor (50.06).

Avon Grove picked up a gold in the 200 IM. Olivia Paloetti cracked the two minute barrier, stopping the clock in 1:59.72. North Penn’s Thamm finished second (2:00.87). Picking up bronze was Butler’s Laura Goettler in 2:02.49.

A sophomore duo topped the 50 freestyle. Gateway’s Livingston set a state record, finishing in 22.73. Governor Mifflin’s Emma Steckiel was runner up in 23.02. Unionville’s junior Camryn Carter placed third (23.05).

Manheim Township’s Amy Yunginer raced to a 54.00 to win the 100 butterfly. WC East’s Ann Carozza snagged silver (54.41) and bronze went to Conestoga’s Madison Ledwith (54.76).

After finishing second in the 50 freestyle, Steckiel anchored her team (22.60) to a 200 freestyle relay victory. Courtney HubricRebecca Brown, and Connar Melcher swam the first three legs as the team finished in 1:33.18. Upper Dublin’s Amdor, Aly BreslinLaura Pendleton, and Molly Braun (1:34.02) were second.

Anna Kalandadze of Lower Merion swam away with the 500 freestyle. The junior stopped the clock in 4:46.25. Avon Grove’s Izzy Paoletti placed second (4:51.76) and in 4:52.22 Parkland’s sophomore Annie Walls was third.

A sophomore found the top of the podium in the 100 backstroke. Cameron Gring of Muhlenberg touched in 54.28 while North Penn’s Zartman was second in 54.98. North Allegheny’s Torie Buerger rounded out the podium in 55.56.

The entire A final of the 100 breaststroke finished faster than 1:05. Olivia Paoletti was first to the wall in 1:01.65. Butler’s Goettler (1:01.82) and Avon Grove’s Rabea Pfaff (1:02.82) completed the podium.

North Penn’s Thamm, Kaelan Daly, Zarthman, and Parker Schulz won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:23.85. Touching second was Upper Dublin’s squad of Amdor, Elle BraunAly Breslin, and Molly Braun in 3:24.41.
