North Carolina High School State Championships

CARY, North Carolina, February 14. THE North Carolina High School State Championships took place February 9-12 in Cary at the Triangle Aquatic Center.

1A/2A Girls Results
Durham Arts' Theresa Meyer and Thomas Jefferson's Alexandra Martelle each won double victories. Meyer took the 200 free (1:52.69) and 500 free (4:56.11), while Martelle won the 200 IM (2:06.49) and 100 breast (1:04.30). Meanwhile, Carrboro's Katie Furey won the 100 free (53.22) and anchored her team to a 400 free relay victory. Megan May, Carrie Hamilton, and Claire Peterman swam with Furey.

Raleigh Charter swimmers won two events and one relay. Rachel Hatt won the 50 free (24.87), while teammate Margaret Ireland finished first in the 100 back (58.89). Kylee Parsons and Alexandra van Dorsten swam along with Ireland and Hatt on the winning 200 free relay (1:42.98). Meanwhile, Bishop McGuinnes' Caitlin Casazza won the 100 fly (57.52), and Lake Norman's Emily Hunt, Lauren Davis, Meaghan Noble, and Rina Leonidas won the 200 free relay in 1:57.72. Lake Norman's Jill Mulveney won the one meter diving competition with 367.70 points.

Raleigh Charter won a tight team race, amassing 227 points to finish just ahead of Lake Norman Charter (216) and Carrboro (215).

1A/2A Boys Results
Raleigh Charter's Joe Bonk and Durham Arts' Michael Thompson each left the meet with two victories. Bonk won the 50 free in 20.90 and later the 100 free in 45.33. In the later race, he lowered his division state record of 46.04 from 2010. Thompson, meanwhile, grabbed wins in the 100 fly (53.05) and 100 back (54.26).

Carrboro dominated the meet, with three individual and three relay wins. Chris Gondek took the 200 free (1:46.48), George Beatty touched first in the 500 free (4:46.61), and Jack Schaufler scored 241.75 points for the win in the one meter diving competition. Caleb Camp, Aidan Marshall, Sam Strosnider, and Gondek won the 200 free relay in 1:41.13, while Justin Morrell, Marshall, Beatty, and Gondek won the 200 free relay in 1:31.56. Camp, Alexander Poole, Beatty, and Strosnider took the 400 free relay in 3:20.34. All three relay teams established new division records.

West Davidson's Chase Frazelle won the 200 IM (1:59.12), while Own's Alex Horner placed first in the 100 breast (1:05.05) to round out the event wins. Carrboro finished clear of the pack in the team battle, with 358.5 points, while Lake Norman Charter (181) and West Davidson (157) rounded out the top three teams.

3A Girls Results
Charlotte Catholic dominated its competition, winning all three relays and several individual events. Lauren Rhodes won the 50 free in a new division record of 23.99, while Ashlyn Koletic matched her feat in the 100 free (52.12). Maria Sheridan won the 100 back in 1:00.28. Erin Gackle, Allison McDonough, Sheridan, and Koletic won the 200 medley relay in 1:49.44, while Sheridan, Cara Gilligan, Lauren Stiegler, and Lauren Rhodes clocked a division record of 1:39.19 to win the 200 free relay. Koletic, Gilligan, Elsa Welshofer, and Lauren Rhodes took the 400 free relay in 3:31.54, another division record.

Tuscola's Katy Stringfield took both the 200 (1:50.45) and 500 free (4:56.87), setting division records in both. Teammate Victoria Oslund also set a division record of 55.99 to win the 100 fly. Weddington's Katherine Plevka also doubled, taking wins in the 200 IM (2:05.43) and 100 breast (1:06.81). Additionally, Chapel Hill's Katie Leonard won the one meter diving competition with 346.50 points.

Charlotte Catholic won by a large margin, with a final total 417 points. Marvin Ridge ended up second (296), ahead of Chapel Hill (266).

3A Boys Results
Two swimmers, Hickory's Graham Williams and West Carteret's Bobby Bittner, both took home two victories. Williams took first place in the 200 (1:44.03) and 500 free (4:39.94), while Bittner set top marks in the 100 fly (49.84) and 100 back (51.62). Robinson's Chad Heiser won the 200 IM (1:55.42), and Weddington's Alex Biehl touched out the field in the 50 free in 21.80.

Hunt's Shawn Hunter took the 100 free (47.09), before Christopher Dong won the 100 breast (58.17). In relay action, Cardinal Gibbons won both the 200 medley and 400 free relays. Wesley Sigmon, Adam Fullerton, Nathan Walters, and Bailey Maloney set a division record of 1:37.95 in the medley, while the same quartet won the 400 free relay in 3:15.72. Charlotte Catholic's Nicholas Andrade, Ryan Begley, Ryan Hall, and Jonathan Peterson finished first in the 200 free relay in 1:30.49. C.B. Aycock's Devin Hall won the one meter diving competition with 329.50 points.

Cardinal Gibbons won the meet with 261 points, while Charlotte Catholic edged Chapel Hill for second, 216 to 201.

4A Girls Results
Apex claimed the team title, winning two relays and two individual events along the way. Jessica Godlewski took the 100 fly (55.47), while Hayley Tomlinson grabbed the top spot in the 100 breast in 1:05.36. Victoria Tschoke, Tomlinson, Godlewski, and Jordyn Barham finished first in the 200 medley relay in 1:45.91, and Sarah Henry, Barham, Tomlinson, and Godlewski won the 400 free relay (3:29.23).

Panther Creek's Henriette Stenkvist and Cary's Victoria Mitchell each earned two victories Stenkvist took the 200 free (1:49.65) and 100 free (54.76), while Mitchell raced to the top spot in the 200 IM (2:03.51) and 500 free (4:51.19). Broughton's Sabrina Benson picked up first in the 100 back (54.76), and Reagan's Alexandra Marshall and Mount Tabor's Nancy Larson tied for first in the 50 free, both clocking 23.74. Marshall led her team to victory in the 200 free relay, along with Maria Seward, Meghan Babcock, and Lillian Gordy. The foursome clocked a time of 1:37.10. Also from Reagan, Alison Menzies won the one meter diving with 431.35 points.

Apex walked away with the team title, earning 223 points, compared to 177.5 for Cary and 168 for Panther Creek.

4A Boys Results
Three swimmers put up impressive double wins. Providence's Kip Darmody led the way, winning the 200 free (1:38.21) and 100 back. Darmody's time of 48.84 in the 100 back established a new division record and just missed Eugene Godsoe's overall state r record of 48.78 set back in 2006. The future Texas Longhorn also led his team to victory in both free relays. Darmody, John Ferretti, Ryan Wilkinson, and brother Kyle Darmody won the 200 free relay in 1:25.01, while Kevin Glenn and Austin Snyder joined the two Darmodys on the 400 free relay to win in 3:08.92.

Green Hope's Dominick Glavich won both the 200 IM (1:48.93) and 100 breast (56.83), and he joined Tad Spence, Seth Connor, and Alex Mathews on the victorious 200 medley relay (1:36.49). Additionally, Sanderson's Ollie Clayton-Luce swept the 50 (20.53) and 100 free (45.46), the former in a division record. W.A. Hough's Peter Brumm took the 100 fly (49.41), while Apex's William Deforest won the 500 free (4:30.63). East Chapel Hill's Charlie Retter won the one meter diving, earning 424.10 points.

Providence won the meet comfortably, scoring 267.5 points. Green Hope ended up second (197), and East Chapel Hill took third (175).
