North Allegheny Boys Dominate Pennsylvania 3A Championships

North Allegheny won the 2018 Pennsylvania Boys 3A High School Swimming and Diving state championships with 301 points. The team’s relays stole the spotlight, setting National High School records in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. North Penn finished second with 190 points.

The team from North Allegheny made it a relay sweep, also winning the 200 medley relay, though in much less dominant fashion. Andrew ZhangJerry ChenTolik Borisov, and Joel Songer touched first in 1:31.14. North Penn’s Ryan HartmannSean FaikishNoah Jamieson, and Ryley Fein were runner ups in 1:31.51.

North Allegheny’s winning turned into a streak when junior Jack Wright won the second event of the night, touching first in the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:34.77. Hatsboro-Horsham senior Andy Thomas finished second with a 1:35.89. Third place went to Mcdowell’s Bobby Bolmanski in 1:39.61.

Rick Mihm brought home another win for North Allegheny. The sophomore finished the 200 IM in a 1:46.09. Kennett’s Emils Jurick touched in a quick 1:47.91 and North Penn’s Faikish joined them under 1:50 with his 1:49.11. Later in the meet Mihim won the 500 freestyle (4:24.02) and Jurick finished second (4:28.04).

Mason Gonzalez brought home North Allegheny’s fourth straight gold, clocking a 19.99 second 50 freestyle. State College’s Matt Brownstead, only a sophomore, earned silver in 20.08. Bronze went to Liberty’s Robert Negron in 20.40. Gonzalez and Wright went one-two in the 100 freestyle in times of 43.03 and 43.56.

Another team finally landed on top of the podium in the 100 butterfly. Conestoga junior Brendan Burns posted a state record 47.04 100 butterfly. The old mark was a 47.26 set by Ryan Dudzinski in 2015. Penn Hills’ Kimani Gregory was second (48.03) and North Penn’s Ryan Hartmann (49.41) finished third. Gregory was third in the 100 freestyle (43.76).

Wright, Songer, Mihm, and Gonzalez combined for the 1:19.60 that set the state, and National Public School record in the 200 freestyle relay.

Burns returned for another state title, winning the 100 backstroke by a solid margin in 46.93. Zhang touched second (49.30) and Souderton’s Storm Krader also cleared 50 seconds (49.84).

Josh Matheny, a freshman from Upper St. Clair dominated the 100 breaststroke, finsihing in 54.55. North Penn’s Faikish touched second (55.43) and North Allegheny’s Chen (56.30) was third.

Gonzalez, Zhang, Wright, and Mihm won the 400 freestyle relay in 2:53.81, destroying the state record (2:59.58) and the National mark. Harboro-Horsham was second in 3:02.44.
