No. 6 Stanford Women Take 119-67 Lead Over No. 11 Texas

AUSTIN, Texas, October 27. NO. 6 Stanford won nine of 10 events on the opening day of a two-day dual meet at No. 11 Texas on Friday to take a commanding 119-67 lead over the Longhorns at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. Julia Smit highlighted Stanford's performance and the set the tone in the meet's second event when she won the 400 IM in dominating fashion by clocking in with an NCAA "A" qualifying time of 4:10.96. The effort makes her the No. 5 all-time Stanford performer ever in the event and was just under 10 seconds better than her nearest competitor. Smit also added a 200 back victory later in the meet when she won in an NCAA "B" time of 1:59.32.

Caroline Bruce had the meet's other NCAA "A" mark with a time of 2:10.19 to take the 200 breast. Other Stanford individual winners included Brooke Bishop (100 free, 49.61), Cassidy Krug (1-meter diving, 287.77), Elaine Breeden (100 fly) and Desireé Stahley (500 free, 4:53.78) with all three swimmers recording NCAA "B" marks.

Stanford also swept both relay events in NCAA "B" times. In the meet-opening 200 free relay a team of Madeline Rovira, Breeden, Michelle Liu and Bishop turned in an effort of 1:32.71. Smit, Bruce, Breeden and Bishop closed out the swimming portion of Friday's slate of events with a 3:41.53 to captured the 400 medley relay.

Mary Yarrison saved Texas of a complete opening day sweep by the Cardinal by winning the 3-meter diving with 313.80 points.

Breeden added another NCAA "B" mark for Stanford with a third-place finish in the 100 free (50.34), while Smit had a second NCAA "B" time with her time of 55.12 in the 100 back to lead off Stanford's winning 400 medley relay squad.
