No. 25 Michigan Women Upset No. 15 Ohio State

ANN ARBOR, Michigan, January 18. SENIOR Adrienne Bicek (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) and junior Angela Chokran (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) won two individual races apiece as the No. 25-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team earned a 163-137 upset win over No. 15 Ohio State on Friday (Jan. 18) inside Canham Natatorium.

Bicek finished first in both the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:02.97) and 500-yard freestyle (4:51.67), while Chokran touched first in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.68) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:14.33). The Wolverines led the entire evening, winning eight events during the meet and going 2-3-4-5 in two races and 2-3-4 in two others.

The Wolverines started fast, winning the first race of the night — 200-yard medley relay. The quartet of freshman Ali DeLoof (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe South), Chokran, senior Ashley Cohagen (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and senior Deirdre Jones (Nashville, Tenn./University School of Nashville) touched the wall first at 1:41.26, overtaking the Buckeyes during the second leg of the relay.

Ohio State responded by going 1-2-3 in the 200-yard freestyle, but Michigan answered behind DeLoof, who took top honors in the 100-yard backstroke (55.19) — narrowly ahead of sophomore Claudia Lau (Hong Kong, China/Diocesan Girls' School), who finished second (55.34). Michigan closed out the first part of the meet strong as junior Courtney Beidler (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock South), freshman Marni Oldershaw (Oakville, Ontario/Iroquios Ridge) and Bicek finished second (2:00.09), third (2:02.67) and fourth (2:04.68), respectively in the 200-yard butterfly. Jones, freshman Zoe Mattingly (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville) and freshman Sharalynn Missiuna (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar) did the same thing in the 50-yard freestyle, as U-M headed into the first break up, 75-56.

While Ohio State won the first two races out of the break (100-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke), the Wolverines went 2-3-4-5 to neutralize any scoring gains. The last individual event victor was Oldershaw taking first in the 200-yard individual medley (2:02.73). Beidler finished second (2:03.55).

The Maize and Blue ended the night with a race win as the team of Jones, Missiuna, Lau and DeLoof won the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:24.28).

In the diving well, junior Erin Bridgewater (Kawkawlin, Mich./Bay City Western) was the team's top performer, finishing second on both the one-meter (289.20) and three-meter boards (310.05).

Michigan returns to the pool next Friday (Jan. 25) to face Big Ten foe Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich. The meet starts at 6 p.m.
