NJCAA Championships: Indian River Sweeps Again

BUFFALO, New York, March 7. INDIAN River State College continued its dominance of the junior college ranks at the program swept the men's and women's titles at the 2009 NJCAA Championships held in Buffalo, N.Y.

IRSC's men captured their 35th straight team victory with a total of 1026.5 points. Lincoln finished second with 651.5 points, while Darton (521), Monroe (272) and Iowa Central (250) placed third through fifth.

The Indian River women won their 28th consecutive title with a total of 938 points. Darton wound up taking second with 670 points, while Monroe (423), Ocean County (284) and Genesee (279) completed the top five.

IRSC's Rebecca Harrison crushed the field in the women's 1650-yard free with a time of 17:44.61 to win the event. Teammate Mateo De Angulo then broke the pool record in the men's 1650-yard free with a time of 15:07.95. The effort smashed the 15:10.63 set by Kenyon's Read Boon back in 2001.

The River's Monika Mialka dominated the women's 200-yard back with a winning time of 2:00.97, while IRSC's Zack Stockman touched out teammate Matt Libby, 1:50.50 to 1:50.98, in the men's 200-yard back.

IRSC's Jennifer Marquez joined teammate Mary O'Sullivan under an 11-year-old NJCAA record of 50.25 in the women's 100 free set by Vincennes' Teresa Moodie in 1998. Marquez touched in 49.78, while O'Sullivan took second in 50.04. River's Emmett Walling broke his pool record in the men's 100 free with a time of 43.32.

In the 200-yard breaststrokes, IRSC's Mary Frank takes home the women's title in 2:20.10. Meanwhile, Darton's Aviv Sela pocketed the men's crown in 1:59.73.

IRSC's Yesica Rojas earned the women's 200-yard fly title in 2:08.94, while teammate Robbie Sullivan set an NJCAA and pool record in the men's 200-yard fly with a time of 1:46.18. The performance wiped out the NJCAA record of 1:46.49 set by Gordon Touw Ngie Tjouw in 2008.

The 400-yard free relays completed the meet. IRSC's Marquez (50.43), Katie McRoberts (51.28), Cara Potter (52.13) and O'Sullivan (49.87) broke last year's NJCAA record with a time of 3:23.17. The effort beat the former record as set by IRSC with a 3:25.94. IRSC's Kelley Wyman, Walling, Nick Hein and Nick Schwartz closed the curtain on the 2009 meet with a time of 2:56.90. The swim beat the River's pool record of 2:57.84 set back in 2003.
