COLLEGE STATION, Texas, March 19. WHILE Texas freshman phenom Kathleen Hersey earned the initial talk this morning with the second-best swim of all time in the women's 200-yard IM, Stanford's Julia Smit showed how it is done with an American, U.S. Open and NCAA record.

Smit blasted the pool with a time of 1:52.79 to break the 1:53 barrier as her previous record stood at 1:53.11.

The win broke a three-way tie between Auburn, Florida and Stanford for the most NCAA titles in the event as Stanford moved to six all time. The win is the first for Stanford since Jenny Thompson won in 1995, while Susie Rapp (1986), Janel Jorgensen (1990) and Summer Sanders (1991-92) were previous winners.

Hersey wound up taking second with a time of 1:53.33 as the third-fastest time ever, while Auburn's Ava Ohlgren placed third in 1:54.08. That effort is among the top 10 ever.

Georgia remained in the team lead with 86 points, while Arizona moved up to second with 78 points. Auburn (70), Stanford (66) and California (55) comprised the rest of the top five.
