NCAA Women’s Championships: Virginia, Stanford, NC State Set for High-Scoring Friday Night (Heat Sheets)

During the Friday morning prelims session at the NCAA Women’s Championships, Virginia swimmers claimed the top seed in two events with Alex Walsh topping the 400 IM and sister Gretchen Walsh swimming the third-fastest time in history in the 100 backstroke, while Stanford also had two No. 1 results, with Torri Huske first in the 100 butterfly and Taylor Ruck ahead in the 200 freestyle. USC’s Kaitlyn Dobler finished first in a tight 100 breaststroke.

The finals session will include those five events plus 3-meter diving and the 400 medley relay, beginning at 6 p.m. from the Allan Jones Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tenn.

The top-performing team in the morning was Virginia, already leading the team scores by 46.5 points, and the Cavaliers qualified seven championship finalists and two consolation finalists for Friday. In addition to the Walsh sisters, Ella Nelson placed second in the 400 IM, and Kate Douglass is third in the 100 fly while Aimee Canny and Maxine Parker have A-final swims in the 200 free. Emma Weber snuck into the 100 breast top heat, and the Cavaliers are set to extend their lead over Texas.

Stanford also qualified for nine individual swims in the evening session, with Claire Curzan set for both the 100 fly and 100 back finals plus Lucy Bell in the 400 IM and Kayla Wilson in the 200 free. The Cardinal, currently in fourth place overall, look set to move into third and potentially second in the evening.

NC State went four up and five down in the morning, with Grace Sheble (400 IM), Kylee Alons (100 fly), Heather MacCausland (100 breast) and Katharine Berkoff (100 back) in the top heats of their respective events. The Wolfpack currently occupy 11th place overall after a disqualification in the 200 free relay Thursday evening. If not for that DQ, NC State would be in fifth position, so head coach Braden Holloway’s squad will need to continue showing up big to rebound.

Texas will have four A-final swims as well, with Emma Sticklen in the 100 fly, Anna Elendt and Lydia Jacoby in the 100 breast and Olivia Bray in the 100 back. However, Kelly Pash missing the 200 free A-final by one hundredth was a significant blow for the Longhorns. Other teams with multiple A-finalists include: Ohio State with Katherine Zenick in the 100 fly plus Josie Panitz and Hannah Bach in the 100 breast, Florida with Emma Weyant and Mabel Zavaros in the 400 IM, Louisville with Gabi Albiero in the 100 fly and Paige Hetrick in the 200 free and Tennessee with Brooklyn Douthwright in the 200 free and Josephine Fuller in the 100 back.
