NCAA Men’s Championships: Leon Marchand, Hugo Gonzalez Set for 400 IM Rematch (Heat Sheets)

The third day of the NCAA Men’s Championships on Friday morning will include a side-by-side rematch of last year’s 400 individual medley NCAA final.

The day at the University of Minnesota’s Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center will be begin with Leon Marchand and Hugo Gonzalez in adjacent lanes in the final heat of the 400 IM. Gonzalez set an NCAA record in winning the event last year for California, though Arizona State’s Marchand has since lowered that mark and enters as the top seed. He also won the 200 IM on Thursday night. Gonzalez is the fourth seed, owing to a late start to the NCAA season for the Spaniard. Carson Foster is the second seed in what sets up as a pulsating final.

Friday Heat Sheets are here

The 100 butterfly will include a renewal of acquaintance of two swimmers who got to know each other well at the SEC Championships. Tennessee’s Jordan Crooks is seeded second with Josh Liendo of Florida third. Both are chasing Virginia Tech’s Youssef Ramadan, though, the Egyptian having gone 43.93 at ACCs. Crooks comes into the race off winning the 50 free on Thursday.

The 200 free will give Grant House his best chance to chase an NCAA title. The fifth-year senior is the top seed in 1:30.67. Jack Dahlgren of Missouri is second, though with Texas swimming so well in the 800 free relay, their cohort will likely challenge.

Max McHugh is chasing a valedictory win in the 100 breaststroke in his home pool. The Minnesota fifth-year is the two-time reigning champion. He’d love nothing more than to clip the NCAA record (49.69 of Ian Finnerty) in the final. He’s the second seed in 50.80, .07 behind Florida’s Aleksas Savickas.

The session concludes with the 100 backstroke, where Adam Chaney is the top seed in 44.17. He’ll face a push from NC State’s Kacper Stokowski, last year’s champion and the second seed. Destin Lasco is the third seed.
