NCAA Division III Championships, Night 4: Gabriella Wei, Bengisu Caymaz Lead Kenyon to Women’s Title; Emory Repeats on Men’s Side

NCAA Division III Championships, Night 4: Gabriella Wei, Bengisu Caymaz Lead Kenyon to Women’s Title
With three points separating it atop the NCAA Division III Championships standings entering the final night, Kenyon had a chance to stamp its authority on the meet.
It did so, and emphatically.
Kenyon won the NCAA title for the second time in three years and 25th time overall, behind wins by Bengisu Caymaz in the 1,650 freestyle and a 1-2 from Gabriella Wei and Jennah Fadely in the 200 breaststroke. They ended up 18 clear of Denison, the lead pack leaving NYU behind on the final night at Greensboro Aquatic Center.
Emory clinched its third straight men’s crown. Kenyon was second for the second consecutive year.

Seven hundredths of a second is all that separated Lucas Lang and Connor Vincent after a mile of racing. Lang just hung on in the final 50, coming home in 26.22 to Vincent’s 24.99. That led the Claremont Mudd Scripps junior win gold in 15:17.48. He had been fifth last year.
Vincent, a junior from NYU, was second. It’s his second straight medal, having won bronze last year. Lucas Conrads of Denison was third in 15:22.12. Denison’s Luke Landis was fourth, while Samuel Dienstag of Brandeis dropped a spot from last year to fifth.
Last year’s champion, Kellen Roddy of Johns Hopkins, was seventh in 15:32.85, nearly 12 seconds behind his seed time.

Women’s 1,650 free
Bengisu Caymaz pulled a big of a surprise in winning the 500 free. Three nights later, there was no shock when she went 16:34.67 to add the mile title to the pile. The points were huge for Kenyon, holding off what it traditionally a stronghold for Denison.
Williams’ Lily Codd was second in 16:41.51. She was fourth last year. NYU’s Caitlin Marshall improved from fifth in 2023 to the bronze medal in 16:41.99. Like in the men’s race, the reigning women’s champ from Johns Hopkins, Kristin Cornish, dropped to fourth.
Denison wasn’t as dominant as usual in this event. They put three swimmers in the top 10. But Taryn Wisner and Tara Witkowski were second and third last year. This year, they were 10th and fifth, respectively, with Quinn Brown eighth.

Women’s 200 breaststroke
Jennah Fadely was denied a repeat in the 200 breast. But if it had to be someone, teammate Gabriella Wei isn’t a bad one to lose to.
Wei won in 2:11.70, a half-second slower than Fadely had been last year. Fadely was 1.5 seconds quicker than she had been in prelims but still slower than last season, claiming silver in 2:12.71. Wei had been seventh last year, one of five A-final holdovers.
Charlotte Wishnack is up a spot form last year to third in 2:13.15. She was three tenths ahead of Denison’s Drue Thielking, fourth for a second straight season. Neely Burns is again fifth for Trinity.
