NCAA Division I Men’s Championships: Georgia’s Bill Cregar Nabs 400 IM Crown

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, March 25. IN a close battle with a surging Kyle Whitaker of Michigan, Georgia's Bill Cregar snatched the 400-yard IM title away from Michigan for the first time in five years.

Cregar clocked a time of 3:40.97 to move to 15th in the all time performers list, becoming the first Bulldog to win the event since Robert Margalis claimed the title with a 3:39.92 back in 2003.

Whitaker, meanwhile, finished second with a 3:41.69 to miss his bid for a fifth consecutive victory by Michigan in the event. Previously, Alex Vanderkaay (2007, 08) and Tyler Clary (2009, 10) had kept the title in Ann Arbor the last four years.

North Carolina's Tyler Harris (3:42.49), Arizona's Austen Thompson (3:43.59), Californai's Martin Liivamagi (3:44.46), Florida's Mike Joyce (3:45.03), Texas' Bryan Collins (3:45.11) and North Carolina's Tom Luchsinger (3:47.04) also scored championship final points.

Florida's Conor Dwyer won the B final heat with a 3:42.49, while Texas' Austin Surhoff finished 10th overall in 3:44.35. Stanford's Matt Thompson (3:44.82), California's Ben Hinshaw (3:45.76), Florida's Connor Signorin (3:45.82), Virginia's Matt Houser (3:45.89), Ohio State's Justin Farra (3:46.97) and Georgia's Peter Benner (3:50.12) completed the scoring in the consolation heat.

California maintained its one-point lead over Texas, 193-192, in the team title race. Stanford (170), Arizona (144) and Auburn (142.5) rounded out the top five.
