NC State Wolfpack Led by Strong Swims From Katharine Berkoff, Kylee Alons

The NC State Wolfpack kept up the strong swims on the third day of the North Carolina Janis Hape Dowd Invitational on Friday.

The NC State men won with 1,077.5 points, ahead of North Carolina (747), Virginia Tech (579.5) and Duke (432).

The NC State women also won, scoring 1,067.5 points. Virginia Tech was second (657), followed by North Carolina (530) and Duke (519.5).

The finals session started with the 1650 freestyle events. NC State’s Yara Hierath won the women’s race in16:07.92, while Eric Knowles of the Wolfpack won the men’s race in 14:48. 06.

NC State’s Katharine Berkoff put together a strong swim to win the 200 backstroke in 1:50.20, more than two seconds ahead of the field.

In the men’s 200 backstroke, Mikey Moore of the Wolfpack won in 1:42.66 ahead of teammate 1:43.22.

Kylee Alons was up next for the NC State Wolfpack and won the 100 free in 48.97, holding off Virginia Tech’s Sarah Shackelford (49.05).

Swimming unattached, national team member Michael Chadwick won the 100 free in 41.96 ahead of North Carolina’s Tyler Hill (42.78).

In the women’s 200 breast, NC State’s Andrea Podmanikova won in 2:06.99. The men’s race was won by Valdas Abaliksta in 1:55.19.

Bailey Nero, swimming unattached, won the women’s 200 butterfly in 1:55.72. The men’s 200 fly also went to an unattached athlete as Justin Wright won in 1:41.42.

The session closed with NC State Wolfpack’s Berkoff, Alons, Heather MacCauseland and Julia Poole winning the 400 free relay in 3:14.34.

In the men’s 400 free, NC State’s Hunter Tapp, Luke Miller, Luke Sobolewski and Knowles won in 2:52.03.
