NC State, Florida State vs. Georgia Tech

ATLANTA, Georgia, January 14. THE NC State swimming and diving team started off 2012 strong against ACC rivals Florida State and Georgia Tech. The men defeated both teams to move to 7-1 (4-1 ACC) on the year. The women defeated Georgia Tech but fell to Florida State, to compile a 7-3 (2-3 ACC) record.
The NC State women started the meet off strong with a win in the 200-medley relay. The women also won the 400 freestyle relay in an NCAA B cut of 3:23.94. The Wolfpack grabbed four more first place finished from Marifrances Henley, Hannah Freyman, Zina Grogg and Kelsey Liu.

Henley and Julianna Prim went one-two in the 200 freestyle, hitting times of 1:49.85 and 1:49.86, respectively. Grogg won the 100 butterfly in a time of 55.37, while Prim took fourth in a time of 56.73. Freyman won the 100 freestyle and hit an NCAA B cut with her time of 50.08, good for the second-fastest time in school history. Henley took second in the event (51.18), while Allison Hendren was seventh (52.17).

Kelsey Liu won the 200 individual medley in 2:07.19. Teammates Kayla Grim and Katelyn Linker took third and fourth in the event, swimming times of 2:08.38 and 2:08.66, respectively.

Freyman also placed second in the 100 backstroke (56.11) while Grogg and Siri Smits placed fourth and fifth (57.00 and 57.41). Lauren Poli placed third in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.83) while Liu took fourth (1:06.21) and Kirsten Esplin placed seventh (1:07.37).

Prim took second in the 200 butterfly (2:03.06), while Linker placed fifth (2:05.20) and Maggie McEnerney was seventh (2:06.93). In the 50 freestyle, Freyman took third (23.75) while Hendren placed fifth (23.98). Lauren Poli took seventh (24.23) and Erica Waters placed eighth (24.25).

In the diving events, Hannah Hopkins took sixth in the one-meter dive, followed by Kirstyn Shepler in seventh and Rachel Mumma in eighth. Hopkins placed second in the three-meter dive, while Mumma and Shepler took seventh and eighth, respectively.

Smits took third in the 200 backstroke (2:04.28) followed by Kaitlin Mills in seventh (2:05.79). Liu took second in the 200 breaststroke (2:19.59), followed by Esplin (2:24.99) and Christina McCann (2:25.01). In the 500 freestyle, Henley placed second (4:56.38) while Shelby Hoyt took fourth, dipping under five minutes with her time of 4:59.75.

The Wolfpack men took eight first-place finishes in the meet. NC State won the 200-medley relay, as well as the 400-freestyle relay. The men combined to swim an NCAA B standard (3:00.30) in the 400-freestyle relay.

Jonathan Boffa and Ivan Kopas each won two individual events for the Pack. Boffa won the 100 freestyle in 44.28, good for an NCAA B standard. David Williams took fourth (45.72) while Conor Brennan placed fifth (45.92). Boffa also won the 200 freestyle in 1:38.19. Williams took third (1:39.72), while Matt Thomas was fifth (1:40.50).

Kopas won the 200 backstroke in 1:48.68, and placed first in the 100 backstroke (50.26). Teammate Michael Camper took second in both events, swimming a time of 1:49.96 in the 200 backstroke and 50.63 in the 100 backstroke.

John Newell won the 200 butterfly in a time of 1:49.81, while Ian Bishop won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 56.92. Greg Baskwell placed fourth in the event (57.34), Jake Matysek took sixth (58.10) and Maximus Litvinov was seventh (58.32).

In the diving events, Hudson Rains won the three-meter dive and placed fourth in the one-meter event.

In the 50 freestyle, Boffa placed second in 20.32, which ties for the 10th best time in school history. Joe Martin took fifth (20.74) and Brennan placed eighth (21.01). Brian Via second 1000 freestyle, while teammate Brandon Kingston placed third.

Jake Matysek took second in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:04.92, followed by Andrew Tollefson in third (2:05.74), Bishop in fourth (2:06.55) and Baskwell in fifth (2:06.78). Via took third in the 500 freestyle in 4:35.60, followed by teammate John Newell, who took fourth in 4:38.05.

Taylor Harris, swimming in his first meet for the Wolfpack, placed second in the 200 individual medley in a time of 1:53.11. Kohl Hurdle placed third in 1:53.96, and Baskwell was sixth in 1:55.24. Barrett Miesfeld offered up a second place finish in the 100 butterfly.

NC State will return to action on Friday, Jan. 27 with a home meet against Clemson. Action will begin at 5 p.m.
