Navy Swim Team’s Underwater Tribute to Battle of Iwo Jima Flag Raising Draws Huge Attention

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland, September 26. LAST night, the Navy Swim Team stormed the beaches of Twitter just like the United States stormed Mount Suribachi as part of the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II.

The Navy Swim Team tweeted out a senior picture in which the squad re-enacted Joe Rosenthal’s historic photograph that had five U.S. Marines and a U.S. Navy corpsman raising an American flag at Iwo Jima in 1945. The Marine Corps War Memorial currently houses a sculpture based on the image in Washington, D.C.

Several local television stations carried the Navy picture, while ESPN’s SportsCenter’s Twitter feed also commented on the image.
