Nation’s Capital Leads Day Two Prelims of the 2017 NCSA Junior National Championships

The 2017 NCSA Junior National Championships continued with a wide variety of swimmers grabbing the top seeds in their respective events. Among those fighting for a title tonight will be Alexandra Sumner (200 back), Margaret Aroesty (100 breast), Camden Murphy (200 fly), and a tight race between Eli Fouts and Reece Whitley in the men’s 100 breast.

Nation’s Capital leads the team scores after last night’s races by over 200 points and returns a wide variety of swimmers to tonight’s finals setting themselves up for another run at the team title.

200 Back

The first prelims session, which was competed in short course yards, began with the women’s and men’s 200 backstroke. On the women’s side, Suburban’s Alexandra Sumner led the way with a time of 1:53.41, over a second faster than the next closest competitor. Erin Earley of Hopkins Mariner followed in 1:54.65 for second. City of Mobile’s Paige Madden was third in 1:55.82.

Also in tonight’s final is Nation’s Capital’s Lea Gwenapp, who finished fourth in 1:56.54. Her 14 year old teammate, Phoebe Bacon, was fifth in 1:56.69. Amanda Smith of Northern Kentucky Clippers placed sixth in 1:56.70. Kirsten Romano of Long Island and Madison Homovich of Marlins of Raleigh finished in 1:56.92 and 1:56.93 for seventh and eighth place, respectively.

On the men’s side, Jacob Johnson of NOVA of Virginia led this morning’s heats in 1:44.84. He was followed by Nation’s Capital’s Will Cumberland, who touched in 1:45.71 for second. Metro Atlanta’s Christopher Thames was third in 1:45.92, just ahead of Academy Bullets’s Spencer Walker, who was fourth in 1:45.93.

Justin Grender of Cincinnati Marlins was fifth in 1:46.19, while Caleb Aman from Lane 4 Aquatics was sixth in 1:46.22. Seventh place went to Machine’s Christian Ginieczki, who swam to a time of 1:46.40. Nation’s Capital’s Sean Conway rounded out the top eight for tonight’s final in 1:46.47.

100 Free

15 year old Katelyn Mack of Nation’s Capital finished first in the women’s 100 freestyle, finishing in 49.69. She was followed by Aggie Swim Club’s Julia Cook, who placed second in 49.73. Condors’ Christiana Regenauer came in third at 49.91. Kaitlyn Schorr of Southwest Stars rounded out the swimmers breaking the 50 second mark, placing fourth in 49.98.

Fifth place went to Greater Tampa’s Morgan Tankersley in 50.00. Genevieve Pfeifer of CSP Tideriders and Patriot’s Madeline Smith tied sixth in 50.02. Aquajet’s Carly Quast finished in 50.09 for eighth.

The second men’s event was the 500 freestyle. Robert Freeman of Baylor finished first this morning in 4:23.27. Dayton Raiders’ Eric Knowles came second in 4:24.14. Last night’s champion in the 1000, Nation’s Capital’s Matthew Hirschberger, was third in 4:24.56. Team Greeville’s Talmadge Davis finished fourth in 4:24.82.

Naval Academy’s William Iv Roberts placed fifth in 4:26.54. He was followed by another Nation’s Capital swimmer, Samuel Pomajevich, who swam to 4:26.61 for sixth. Lane 4’s Peyton Werner and Redbird’s Colton Paulson were seventh and eighth, finishing in 4:26.89 and 4:27.68, respectively.

100 Breast

Margaret Aroesty of Long Island finished first in the women’s 100 breaststroke in 1:00.79, She was followed by Houston’s Kylie Powers, who was second in 1:00.98. Third place went to Ema Rajic of the Hudson Explorers with a time of 1:01.52. Just behind Rajic was Academy Bullets’s Alexis Yager for fourth in 1:01.55.

Ingrid Wall, representing New Trier, finished fifth in 1:02.04. Mundelein Mustang’s Valerie Tarazi placed sixth in 1:02.13. Seventh place went to Abigail Harter of Nation’s Capital in 1:02.47. Marlins of Raleigh’s Abigail Arens earned the eighth spot in tonight’s final in 1:02.50.

Rockville Montgomery’s Eli Fouts is tonight’s top seed in the men’s 100 breaststroke with a time of 53.96. Penn Charter’s Reece Whitley was second in 54.18. Spencer Rowe of Nation’s Capital placed third in 54.75, while William Myhre, representing St. Charles, was fourth in 54.77.

Fifth place went to Manhattan Makos’s Dillon Hillis in 54.92. Charles Scheinfeld of New Trier and Jack Dalmolin of Chattahoochee Gold tied for sixth in 55.00. Nation’s Capital’s Timothy Wu finished eighth in 55.22.

200 Fly

The women’s 200 butterfly was led by Highlanders’s Carley Lowe, who finished in 1:57.45. Club Wolverine’s Sierra Schmidt, last night’s 1000 champion, was just behind her for second in 1:57.81. Christin Rockway of Tampa Bay was third in 1:58.43. Marlins of Raleigh’s Homovich was fourth in 1:58.53, and Nation’s Capital’s Harter was close behind in 1:58.56 for fifth.

Razorback’s Luciana Thomas placed sixth in 1:59.00. Hilton Head’s Chloe Corbitt and Suburban’s Sumner tied for seventh place in 1:57.05.

Camden Murphy of Kingfish Aquatics, fresh off a new Michigan D1 Lower Peninsula 100 fly record, turned in the top time of the morning for the men’s 200 fly, stopping the clock at a 1:45.91.  Nation’s Capital picked up the second and third place seeds as teammates Samuel Pomajevich and Darren Durocher posted times of 1:46.07 and 1:46.37 respectively.

Marlins of Raleigh’s Zachary Brown posted a fourth place finish of 1:46.38, followed by Baylor’s Peter Lochmaier and his time of 1:46.98.

Navel Academy Aquatic Club’s William Roberts (1:47.20), Machine Aquatics’ Christian Ginieczki (1:47.33), and Long Island Aquatic’s Orry Zayit (1:47.51) rounded out the top eight qualifiers.
