NEW TRIER–Murphy McQuet successfully won two individual events today at Illinois’ Boys high school state championships.

It was the men of Hindsale who claimed gold in today’s state meet with a final score of 126. Peoria (Notre Dame) was second with 114, while Naperville (Central) rounded out the top three with 113.

Murphy McQuet of Winnetka (New Trier) won his first event of the day in the 200 free with a time of 1:37.71. The senior was only 2.11 seconds off Reed Malone’s 2013 state record. Matt Kamin of Peoria (Notre Dame) out-touched Christopher Kearney by .02 to grab second with a time of 1:39.10.

Sean Workman of Oak Park (Fenwick) grabbed first in the 200 IM in 1:49.38. Workman missed Jake Miller’s 2014 state record by only 1.20 seconds. Sam Iida of Glenbrook South was second in 1:50.91, while Jordan O’Brien of Metea Valley claimed third in 1:50.93.

The 50 free proved to be an exciting race with Jon Salomon of Glenbroko South and Mossimo Chavez of Whitney Young battling it out for first. Salomon was able to touch a slim .01 before Chavez to finish with a time of 20.52.

McQuet’s produced his second win of the day in the 100 free winning with a time of 44.79. Kamin finished second in 45.34. Salomon touched close behind in 45.40.

It was a close race between Hinsdale (Central) and Naperville (Central) in the 200 free relay. NC’s relay team of Christian May (21.43), Liam Coakley (20.64), Connor Walsh (20.67) and Eric Gerlach (20.56) dashed to a quick finish of 1:23.30 to claim the gold. HC’s Franco Reyes (20.69), Brian Powell (20.72), Adam Pircon (21.18) and Brian Portland (20.84) were a close second with 1:23.43.

The 400 free relay proved to be just as exciting as the 200 free relay with Peoria (Notre Dame) and New Trier battling for the top spot. A crucial third leg from Sam Neaveill (45.15) was enough to put PND in the lead and claim the victory. Neaveill joined with teammates Grant Streid (47.93), Ryan Wood (47.79) and Matt Kamin (44.67) for a final time of 3:05.54. New Trier’s relay team of Willie Kinsella (47.32), Drew Keenan (47.19), Maxwell Robertson (47.26) and McQuet (44.21) finished close behind with a time of 3:05.98.

Unique to Illinois’ state meet are four Athletes With Disabilities (A.W.D.) events: 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, and 100 breaststroke. This year Cameron Lee and Anthony Alonzi each claimed gold in two of the events while also breaking the state records.

Lee grabbed first in the 200 free with a 2:20.33 lowering his own record of 2:29.06 from last year. Lee’s success continued in the 100 free where he again broke his own record of 1:06.08 with a swift 1:02.19.

Alonzi was able to beat out the competition in the 50 free with a time of 26.11 finishing 1.09 seconds faster than his state record of 27.02. Dashing to a quick finish and a new state record, Alonzi claimed gold again in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:15.24 succeeding in lowering his state record 1:18.72.
