Misty Hyman and Kristy Kowal Teach Austinites To “Swim Like A Girl”

AUSTIN, Texas, September 16. OLYMPIANS Misty Hyman and Kristy Kowal took their decades of knowledge and experience as competitive swimmers to Austin, Texas, over the weekend, where they held a special “Swim Like A Girl” clinic for the Nitro Swimming.

The ladies on Nitro’s national team, aged between 15and 18 years old, spent a day and a half learning various key aspects of competitive swimming from Hyman and Kowal. With the ladies-only clinic run by two of the best female American swimmers in history, the topics covered various aspects of diet, training and swimming technique. Naturally, Hyman gave pointers on how to execute the dolphin kick as well as she did when she set national high school records in the mid-1990s and won Olympic gold in the 200 butterfly in 2000.

Kowal, an elementary school teacher in Pennsylvania, was also a major source of motivation. Her experience of missing the 1996 Olympic team but rallying to make the 2000 squad and win silver in the 200 breaststroke inspired those in attendance.

From Natalie Davis (17)

“Not only were Kristy and Misty amazing swimmers, they’re even better women and role models. Being able to spend the weekend with them was such a blessing! They taught us about pushing through the rough times, the importance of leaning on your teammates, and how to be confident, with a teeny bit of added sass!”

From Karling Hemstreet (16)

“Misty and Kristy were two amazing women who taught us how to be great women, how to kick some guy butt, and how to be amazing people. I’m so glad we got to meet them. It truly was a once in a lifetime thing.”

Both Misty and Kristy (affectionately known as the “isty’s”) were as down to earth and genuine as they come. I didn’t get too much time with them as it was truly girls only, but the little bit I did get to sit in on was hugely beneficial to the kids. Wisdom is difficult to impart sometimes in the younger set, but Misty and Kristy got their messages through loud and clear. Outstanding weekend for everyone involved. “Nowhere but Nitro!!”
