Missouri’s Jack Dahlgren, Kentucky’s Riley Gaines Named 2022 SEC Scholar-Athletes of the Year

Missouri’s Jack Dahlgren and Riley Gaines of Kentucky were named the 2022 SEC Scholar Athletes of the Year on Friday, the conference announced.

Dahlgren, a senior from Victoria, Minn., has a 3.878 in Missouri’s mechanical engineering undergrad/graduate program. He’s been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll and Dean’s List in each of his nine semesters. A six-time Honorable Mention All-America and a first-teamer last year, Dahlgren has qualified for NCAAs all three of his college seasons.

Dahlgren was fifth in the men’s 200 freestyle at SECs and is the eighth seed in the 100 backstroke Friday night. He holds top-15 times in the nation in the 200 free, 200 back and 100 free.

Gaines helped Kentucky win its first SEC team title in 2021, winning the 200 free, swimming on the winning 800 free relay and taking part in two bronze-medal-winning medley relays. The 800 free relay took home a silver medal from NCAAs last year, while Gaines finished second in the 200 free.

Gaines repeated as the 200 freestyle champ on Thursday and took home the 200 fly on Friday.

A native of Gallatin, Tenn., the senior health sciences major carries a 3.876 GPA. This season, Gaines is the ninth-fastest swimmer in the nation in the 200 free and is also in the top 20 in the 200 fly and 100 free. She’s a five-time All-America and three-time Honorable Mention All-America.
