Mirna Jukic Speaks to Swimming World After European Record

By Stefan Lackner

SCHWECHAT, Austria, July 27. AUSTRIAN Mirna Jukic spoke with one of Swimming World's newest interns Stefan Lackner shortly after her historic European record.

"I knew that I would be ready to beat the European record at the Olympics, but I never imagined that it would happen at our national championships," Jukic said.

The European record coming by way of a 2:23.90 in the women's 200 breast, stands as Austria's first time holding a continental standard according to Jukic.

"I was so excited and surprised," Jukic said. "I was speechless. I still can't really realize what happened yesterday. This was a historic moment for Austrian Swimming. To have our first long course European record ever is so amazing."

Jukic's time moved her into the top three in the world this year. Leisel Jones (2:20.58) and Rebecca Soni (2:22.60) are the only two swimmers faster than her in the event thus far. Jukic definitely understands that she became a legitimate Olympic medal contender with her swim.

"Now, I'm looking forward to Beijing even more," Jukic said. "Many people are saying that I could win a medal now, but to be honest, I don't want to hear any of that. I'm going to prepare as well as I can and will give my best. Whatever happens, happens."

Ultimately, Jukic's goal is like all swimmers to go a best time. She also wants to final at the Olympics.

"I just want to be faster in Beijing than I was yesterday," Jukic said. "It is not going to be easy, because there are a lot of awesome breaststrokers, and the times for finals are going to be very fast. That's why I am looking forward to competing. Now, I just want to reach the finals and beat my personal best. If a medal is possible then, it will be amazing."
